WASHINGTON (AP) - Supermarkets should use their discount card programs that track customers' shopping habits to prevent illness by alerting people who have bought tainted foods, a leading consumer group urged Tuesday.

Such a notification system might have helped avert much confusion over the current peanut recall.

actually it just happened. had bought baklava from sams for t-giving, and just last week i received a letter saying to discart it for chances of salmonella contamination. they suggested i return it and get my money back. baklava is gone and i did not get sick (i am the only one who eats it) but i was surprised about the letter.

I always laugh when they talk about food recalls on the news for products made "up to two years ago." What's the point of issuing a recall for some food that was sold two years ago?

Costco does this. We got a phone call and two letters saying that the crackers we bought were on the recall list.

Heh. I can just see Winn-Dixie trying to call up my cat. All the loyalty cards are in her name. Mew?

Also been notified by Sam's Club about some recalled Angus burgers about a year ago, and some peanut butter several years ago.
