CHICAGO, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- More U.S. shopping malls are lowing thermostats and cutting store hours as they try to ride out the recession, industry managers say.

"Just like any business, we're trying to look at some of the extra costs that we can do without this year," said Lindsey Burke, marketing director for Yorktown Center in Illinois.

Actually - I wish malls WOULD lower the thermostat in the winter. Most people are schlepping around in their winter coats, etc.

Was just at the outlet mall in Hilton Head, SC and tourists were everywhere- with bags I must ad (we've all seen folks just walking around w/ no bags which means no business)

Well, I walked into the Ralph Lauren store and the bed display caught my eye- I knew it would be about $500 or so but I wanted it.

The clerk locked the door and shouted- We're closed.

Yep, the center closes at 7 alright. As I walked out I heard others say they weren't done shopping.

Just one instance later hours on a Saturday would mean more money.

They've already limited the hours our mall in Palm Desert is open. It used to be open from 10am to 9pm. Now it's open from 10:30am to 8:30pm. I already thought I didn't have enough time to shop!
