That doesn't happen today, but it sure might the way things are going. Today you think your privacy is worth nothing so you might as well give it away for a discount (a discount from a price that was already jacked up to begin with). But tomorrow circumstances might change. For you it will be too late because once you give away your privacy, you can never get it back. Once that information is out of your control, it stays out of your control for as long as anyone else wants it to.
Then you need to just say no to the discount and pay the higher price plain and simple because it never comes up except at a register when you buy something, Its not hard to say no.

Exactly. I think it's used more for marketing. I don't mind them knowing what I buy. It's not like they're tracking my thoughts or something.

If it really bothers you, use a fake phone number on your application.

[quote=Buzz123;8235183]Yesterday at CVS my wife was mad because we had forgotten the $3.00 off any purchase coupon that I got the last time I was there by showing them my membership card. We made our purchase then my wife found something else to buy, and from the first purchase we got a coupon for $2.50 off the second purchase. Every time we shop there we get more big discounts by having the card. Hardly an imposition. Although I don't like my wallet stuffed with cards either, it comes in handy, but only if you like to save money. And at many stores, such as CVS or Petsmart, all you need to do is give them your phone number if you forgot to bring the card. My DIL got gas at Albertson's last week for $1.35 a gallon from using the card. By showing the card at Albertson's we not only get the sale prices, the more you purchase the less your Albertson's gas will cost, plus we can use it to get cash from our bank debit account. None of those cards, if stolen, will jeopardize your identity, or be useful to a thief. Sounds like you're from a backward part of the country. Probably New York or New Jersey. Some people complain about being hung with a new rope. Now go back to CVS, apologize and ask for a card.[/QUOTe

Whoa bud...people from Ny or Nj are hardly backwards....o/p just sounds like some paranoid old dude

Now after furthur posts on this issue, my decision is now more crystallized.

I understand perfectly why these CVS robots ask this question, they're programmed and there's probably hidden listening devices if they don't ask me robotically if I have a CVS card. Viva Walgreen's!

Much of my paranoia stems from having read one too many true crime books.
Like the last one, where a man was making up a story about where he was the night his wife was murdered. Idiot! Even with his cell phone turned off they tracked his movements through cell phone towers!

Is there no privacy left? I have nothing to hide, but, I try hard to protect my what's left of my privacy. Why do they apprehend so many fugitives here in Las Vegas staying at motels/hotels here? Copies of your driver's license are sent to police substations for investigation. Surprise! Surprise!

That's what I love about traveling to Latin America. Hand them your cash and enjoy your stay!

right now the cards are for marketing purposes. Its cheaper to target specific
people with specific coupons and mailers, not waste money sending to everyone
in the neighborhood. I work in market research and believe me retailers and manufacturers, especially packaged food manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to increase sales. Who knows what part of the information will be sold off in the future.
There is already tons of information stored on almost everyone, you would be amazed.
There was a special about it on television awhile back, might have been 60 minutes or something similar.

I am not a paranoid - read post #35. But.........

You would not believe some of the things people will do to justify their job. If snooping around finding out what we all eat for dinner is something they can justify, and they feel their job may be in jeopardy because there is a lack of work, you are going to get snooped.

Another example we all see constantly. Advertising.

Tell me why products need a new box design every six months. What is that makes them think I will buy it with the new box when I didn't with the old? What makes them think I won't see the a product I commonly use because of the design change, give up trying to find it on the shelf, and buy their competitors product?

Job security. If the boxes stayed the same too long the designers would be pounding the pavement.

Knowing how the insurance companies work (and it's getting worse since Katrina and the economic meltdown) they are going to be looking for more and more reasons to either raise your rates, flat deny you coverage, or refuse to give you medication you might need. After all what does a stupid doctor know about health care? I would not be surprised if they do buy the "What we eat and drink" database and use it against us.

I just went through this with Celebrex. I've been taking it for about six months and Big Blue We S c r e w You just decided I can't take it anymore. Never mind the Hell I go through without it. Apparently I don't need it. Seems it costs too much to keep the pain to a dull roar.

*******s. Fill this in with your favorite.

What was the question?

This is what I am thinking.

About 10 or so years ago there was a story on the news, and it was being discussed all over the radio...it was a DUI conviction where they used the guy's shopping record from his card against him.
