Many people are brainwashed into thinking WalMart has the best deals. They drive miles, past many other retailers to get to one, to purchase select items that are promoted at ridiculously low prices. These items are called loss leaders. Walmart loses money on them, but gains it back quickly as most people go into a frenzy, buying other items perceived as similar great deals. It's no coincidence that Walmart does well in lower income/rural areas.

Sorry, I don't think you're giving the consumer enough credit.
Maybe the regular store flyers that may be true. But many like myself have done the math and sorry but WalMart is cheaper...or less expensive for those who like to dwell on the word "cheap".
I did the comparison...as many others have also...I've tried to buy the same things at the local grocer, Target AND K-Mart.....so when you add in the extra gas and the time you spend going from store to store....Walmart beat them everytime.
If you don't like WalMart...then fine...don't shop there. I get the same stuff at WalMart that I get from anyplace else. Nobody gets after Target or K-Mart for selling the made in China stuff. Why just WalMart? Because it's more successful?
But bottom line? It's my budget that I have to stick to. Not anyone else's.
I'm headed to Wal*Mart this afternoon to buy four new tires - maybe five (need to look at my spare).
I priced five different places, including Wal*Mart, and not only did they have the lowest priced tires, but they were a brand name that, while just 'average' tires, still get better reviews than the no-names that the other tire shops had (at a higher price).

I'm not getting after WalMart for selling "Made in China stuff". Unfortunately there are far more stores than WalMart, or Target or KMart that offer Chinese imported products. My problem with WalMart is their business practices. If you're unaware, do some reading. If all in all your satisfied with your choice after reading about said practices, perhaps you should rethink your "patriotism" which you seem to wear so proudly.

What are the biggest criticisms of Wal-Mart's business practices? I'm curious (this is not a debate- I just want the short version rather than searching online).
I know a lot of people shun Walmart for their business practices- but for me in these times I want to save money. I try to stay local with coupons but for some things I will still buy at Walmart.
Walmart can be a pain when all along they carry an item and now after a few months they don't. I have experienced this as well in BJ's and Costco and just find a replacement.
Walmart doing sometings right, it create many multi billionairs and employ more than 1 million people in the US, i would shop there if it is not out of the way.
Well.. Wal Mart has pretty much monopolized smaller towns/cities across the U.S. It might be the ONLY place to shop.
Several towns/suburbs in my area have only one place to shop for groceries.. Wal Mart. Even the big city (or should I say, the giant suburb) of San Antonio has only a handful of places to shop for groceries (HEB, Wal Mart, Target)
Small towns across the U.S. that used to have several mom and pop shops have been turned into exits off the highway with a McDonald's, an Exxon gas station, and a Wal Mart. I guess America has lost interest in small town identity where you once got your meat from the local butcher, your hair cut from the local barber, your food provisions from a market or even Old John down the road at his farm, your clothes and shoes fitted by sweet old Mrs. Anne at her shop, and ice cream at one of those stands or even from the ice cream truck.
So "LiveUrban"....going by your username and your listed locale of San Antonio, it sounds like you live in an area large enough to benefit from competition and variety, but you like the idea of small towns not having those benefits....I understand the argument against Walmart - your comments just come off a bit strange when you extol the virtues of what you imagine to be quaint, simple, small-town life - you just don't personally want to live there. You just want others to live there and maintain the ideal for you....
