NEW YORK - Dollar stores, which now sell everything from beauty products and turtlenecks to peanut butter, soft drinks and ice cream, are increasingly popular and can be rewarding places to shop, but they also can be overwhelming.

Stores that offer most or all of their stock for $1 or less — the modern version of five-and-dimes, where most merchandise went for 10 cents or less — have picked up substantial new business as consumers seek bargains during the recession.

I thought this story was kind of dumb when I read it earlier. Of course they might not save you more! No store is going to save you more all the time. You have to be a savvy shopper no matter where you go. What, is the author assuming that everyone thinks that everything at the dollar store is a huge steal? Please, dear author, don't insult our intelligence. We aren't all idiots. Some things at dollar stores are great deals. Other things are crappy plastic toys that will break in two minutes. Give us credit for having brains, please!

sheriwx; Your so right, they don't always save you money. Usually they have yougarts, for $3 for a $1.00 but i was at my Stater Bros and they had yougarts on sale for 39 cents each, a better yougart, and i went with those, And so many times you do have to watch out for the can goods, the stores so much of the time have better deals, with there sales. You just have to watch, and be aware of pricing.
