What a hilarious thread! I just read it in its entirety for the first time. Don't know which is more remarkable, the OP and his cluelessness or the people getting almost hysterical trying to put him down and insult him for it. It does seem wasteful and silly to pay $3 to cash one's payroll check, but as pointed out, some people prefer not to have a bank account and/or not to have direct deposit, which is so illogical it blows my mind. I never knew that many people lived in a time warp until about a year ago when I started a thread on the subject of how can people live if they don't have a checking account. What an eye opener! It is much more common than I would have believed possible. For those people, the $3 at Walmart is actually pretty reasonable.

Edited to add: I just found that old thread of mine, which is in the Personal Finance subforum of the Business, Finance and Investing Forum. It is entitled, "How common is it not to have a checking account?" and is half-way down page 11 of Personal Finance. The thread has been inactive for a while.

*thread resurrected*

Walmart is open on holidays. There's only a handful of places you can cash your check on (thanksgiving).

Happy Thanksgiving

My son is 19.
He works nights and gets his paycheck on Thursday night at 1 am.
He cashes his paychecks at Walmart due to their extended hours.
He then picks up personal items he needs, some food/snacks and goes
home to sleep.

I have no idea why anyone would think this is odd.

My next door neighbors don't have a bank account, because they don't make enough money to put money into one. The liquor store charges them $10 to cash checks.

Really? Your joking right? Walmart has an alternative motive for allowing someone to cash a check in their store for such a bargain price of $3.00, amazing.

I think everyone here knew the plan well before you decided to point it out. Your belief about being able to walk into any bank and cash a check is definitely mis-guided. You cannot just walk into any bank and cash a check if you do not have an account there, also IF the bank does allow you to cash a check without an account there even if the person who writes the check has an account at that bank the bank will STILL charge YOU the non account holder a fee to cash that check. The real world of checks, cash and finance is a very scary place and has lots of rules and is not for the faint of heart, much like the rest of the real world.

They would have $10/check to put in if they didn't cash them at the liquor store....

Seriously? You're going to grill him 3 years after? Especially since everyone else in this thread already did that.... 3 years ago?

What fool would go out of their way to cash a paycheck at Walmart with all the banks in the world? I have seen it all now,
Whoa....what if a person is traveling, has their paycheck with them and does not have a regular account where they are going to? Most EVERY city in the USA has a Walmart somewhere, right?? How convenient for this traveler to have such a luxury in a strange town. Ever try to cash a paycheck in a strange town?? Ever get one single bank in a strange town to cash it for you without an act of congress? How long do you think you would look for a home branch of your bank in a strange area? Of course they want you to shop in their store but at the same time they are letting you know that they have other conveniences as well.

I agree the advertisement is leading you into the direction of shopping there but I can tell you about one commercial here that advertises a particular lawyer to call AFTER you are already dead...now thats a dilly for sure!

Today you can just deposit with a cell phone. However, three years ago, when the person originally posted this, you didn't have that option. So I think that's not really a valid usage anymore.

Walmart is targeting folks who don't have bank accounts. And there are many reasons why a person might not have a bank account.
