CINCINNATI (AP) — Macy's (M) will close nine stores that employ a total of about 900 people, the retailer said Friday.

"While the decision to close stores is difficult, it is necessary that we do so selectively in locations with declining sales and where we have been unable to identify sufficient growth opportunities," said Terry Lundgren, Macy's chairman and CEO.

The mall in Oklahoma City, Crossroads Mall, where a Macy's is closing has been on it's way out for a while, anyway.

If they carried more unique items, items you can't get anywhere else, they might be able to stay in business. There's nothing really unique about Macys.

Not true! The prices are unique

I saw a sweater there listed for $40 that was only $15 at Kohl's.

Sort of like the unique prices at Saks Fifth. They also have a lot of the same stuff you see at other stores or on Ebay, but for $1,000 more!

Maybe the people boycotting them because they sell fur are having an effect.

I didn't know Macy's sold fur. They don't sell it at our Macy's, but then, who needs a fur when it's 120 degrees out!

In all the Macy's stores that I have been to, I haven't found anything that I would remotely think of wearing. It seemed that the clothes either catered to 18 year olds or 85 year olds. There wasn't anything in between. (This was over a year ago in Ca.) No normal clothes that a mid 30's person would like to wear. By that I mean skin-tight clothes with butts hanging out etc....

Our Nordstrom left our town a handful of years ago, precipitating the downfall of the whole surrounding mall. What had happened was simply a store getting fed up with the mall owner and his strange business practices. It had very little to do with the economy or store problems.
