I've noticed that you can almost always have fees waived, by just asking. I recently moved to another place in the same town. The phone company said there would be a $30 fee to transfer service. I said "This might be a good time for me to consider another kind of phone service". He quickly offered to waive the fee. Same with cable. I said "What's this extra charge?". He said "Let me reduce that by half". Then I asked how much it would cost me to add HBO, since baseball season is over. He gave me a 3-months-free introductory offer, which I would never have known about if I hadn't asked.
Whenever I have a late fee for anything, even credit card, I just give a plausible excuse or claim misunderstanding and ask if they can waive the fee. They usually do.
I always check with my car insurance company every year or so, to make sure I'm getting all the discounts I'm entitled to. Quite often I find that I had been paying too much.
Maybe you should consider starting a business to do this for people who are trying to cut down on their budgets....but don't know how or what to ask from the service providers in their life.
Thanks for the suggestion though....I will certainly try it.
I've done it with the cable company before and need to do it again. I'll ask them "Where do I return my boxes and equipment"? and they will ask why. I tell them it was $115 when I started with your service and now the bill is getting out of control and they dropped $35 a month off my bill in the past, but it's creeping back up again.
Yup! Once I accidentally called a family member in Ireland (I'm in the US) with my cellphone without putting my calling card # in first. The charge for the call was going to total over $80, I think. I called up my cellphone provider (AT&T) and groveled at their feet to do something, and sure enough they took off the ENTIRE charge!
I mean, it was totally my fault that it happened, so I didn't expect much. Still, they delivered beyond what I expected!
