upgrading to iPhone--Q about keeping same number (cell phone, house)

I've recently moved to a new state but kept my old cell phone number. Until we're finished building our house, etc., I really need to keep my same old cell phone number that all our contacts already have, BUT, I was going to get a new iPhone for Christmas. If I go ahead and get one now, will I be able to transfer my old cell number to the new phone bought in the new location?
