I like online shopping and I think it's a safe experience. I'm not worried about risking my credit card and if there's something I have to have and I've never shopped there before or it's a small business site, I use paypal for the transaction.
I've used Drs Foster and Smith for pet supplies (cheaper than Petsmart for some products and no tax and you can find coupon codes), Wal Mart, the list goes on.

I own an online business.
Some people like to place their orders by phone, because they think it's safer than typing them onto the form onsite.
Actually, the opposite is true. Ordering online is safer.

We had our credit card number stolen once when my husband dined at a restaurant out of state. We found a lot of purchases on our statement that we could not have made and reported them to the credit card company. Their investigation found that someone had grabbed several of the carbon copies out of the restaurant trash, thus acquiring everything they needed to go on a wild illegal shopping binge.

Bank of America Visa and Mastercard has an extra layer of security available for online shopping, called Shopsafe. (Maybe other banks have something similar)

Basically, when you're ready to make an online purchase you open another window and sign in to your online banking account and click on Shopsafe. You enter the amount limit you need for the purchase plus a time limit and it generates a one-time card number for you to use. It bills back to your true card account, but the merchant only sees the one-time number, and anyone getting that number off his records would be unable to use it for anything else since it's expired in both time and dollar amount.

You can also use it to set up individual numbers to pay your monthly fees like your internet connection, Netflix, etc. and you can put an expiration on it; for instance one number is set to pay $18.48 once a month to Netflix for a one year period. Using the time limit protects you from "automatic rebilling" used by sites such as Ancestry, which you may not want to renew but you forget to cancel in time.
