Ummm, I like BOTH chains and mom & pops. The more the better. To the OP, while I understand why you are against chains, I think your suggestion goes way too far in the other direction. It certainly is not legal.
The only chain I will NEVER support is Walmart. I believe they are systematically wiping out their competition in one category after another.
^^Yeah, people from small towns and sprawling cities who are so used to them and that's all they mostly know.
Of course it will never happen, but I'm just saying it would be nice.

Pretty much the ENTIRE country is covered with chains, INCLUDING NYC. In NYC, ever hear of McDonalds, Burger King, Home Depot, Macys, Bloomingdales, Sears, Mandys, Blockbuster Video, Wendys, Exxon, Shell, 7 Eleven (!), etc. ?

Not like it is in other areas. NYC metro is not known to have nearly as many chains as other places. My town mostly has mom and pop restaurants. Those gas stations are everywhere. I wouldn't consider gas stations chains.
Here's a list of restaurants. I'd say only like 10% of them are actual chains across the country--

Chain stores are actually a strong contribution in our average standards of living.
They normally run much more efficiently than mom and pop stores at organizing and optimizing huge levels of inventory. I would think if everything went back to mom and pop stores the average cost of goods and services would increase quite a bit for all Americans.
so the govt is going to start making it ILLEGAL for a business to grow? Great economics. Perhaps you should move to china where these things happen. (cue misinformed idiot with the pro china rhetoric).

Another thing I hate about Walmart is how they lure away the employees at mom & pop stores by paying higher wages.
I think the consumer has already spoken - they prefer chain stores. They bring the goods which people want cheaply.
Very few markets buck this trend. This is why I love living in Seattle. McD's tried to go into an area with a lot of mom and pop shops and they totally failed. The reason? "No drive through." Yeah, right, people just didn't want to eat that crap. Lots of mom and pop shops around here, and where there's chains, we like them because they're local - like Costco, Starbucks, Tully's, Taco Time, and a few others are born in Seattle.
My wife and I own a small mom and pop business and I'm not worried about chain stores at all.
If you don't like chain stores then simply don't shop at them.

You MUST be delusional. Levittown is the capitol of chain stores and restaurants. There is a Target and a WalMart right there. It's also strip mall central. Levittown doesn't even have a town. If anyone from around the country could see where you live they would be laughing their butts off at the picture you are painting of where you live.
Long Island is general is the ultimate suburb. People here like to think they are so cosmopolitan, but the more you talk like this the more provincial you sound.
