Why do furniture stores, manufactures and people insist on calling crappy traditional looking furniture contemporary? Do they not know what contemporary means or unaware of who its suppose to look. I understand that "contemporary" encompasses a large spectrum of sub styles but I went furniture shopping this weekend and some of the things I saw labeled as such were quite the opposite. I ended up settling on pieces from moddis.com and danishinspirations.com which I'm very pleased with.
Because of the popularity of IKEA & the resurgence of MCM-style architecture/design, all stores want to cash in, especially along the lower price rungs. Very few ppl have any background in art or design, so anything that doesn't look like it belongs in Ethan Allen is labeled "contemporary" or "modern". I like DWR and Vitra. Also Berkley Mills does exquisite woodwork in a contemporary Japanese-inspired way.
