It's super convenient to base that's for sure, but it's mostly sub 120K property and pretty run down due to open access and an iffy middle school. Don't get me wrong, I rent in shed road which is just as shady and open access too, and most homes here run for sub 100K. I also recognize 850/mo for a 3 bed close to base is a decent deal, but there's a reason you're renting the place. I venture to say you wouldn't be interested in purchasing in the area. If you are you're probably lying because at 850/mo you could afford to purchase in the same area. Very few people on base that I interact with are buying around the bossier gate, except northgate village. Most look at a minimum at Savannah Place, Golden Meadows et al. but not the area around patricia. West of airline is also fairly hit and miss, literally street by street. People with children are buying north of 220 if they can afford it, or south of jimmy davis bridge, again if they can afford it, or haughton. Central bossier is hit and miss, like I said I wouldn't buy overpriced cookie cutter crap in north bossier, but I sure ain't looking at airline and patricia.....

Good luck!
We rent because we are not interested in buying a property where we intend to have a short stay. Our BAH is decent but we prefer to live below our means in order to save for a home purchase post military retirement.

I am not at all offended by the quality of our neighbors or the manner in which they keep their homes and property. I stand by my claim that my neighborhood is a reasonable area in which to rent a home.

It's an older area, but not much crime to speak of. I have a friend who lives over there now and had one when I was younger. It's not bad at all.

You could consider looking into Highland. It's got a bad rap, but it actually has some very nice areas. It's being "gentrified" on a block by block basis, but retails a lot of it's soul which I liked a lot. I lived there for a while and never felt unsafe. I've moved north, but still own and rent out a 3/2 with a cedar-fenced yard, great neighbors, hardwood floors, and an updated kitchen for $900.

I love the Highland area. My fraternity house was in Highland, which I lived in for a year, and before that I spent about 6 months in a little duplex that was fantastic. If I were to ever move back to Shreveport, I'd buy in Highland.

That being said, you do have to have a certain tolerance level for the rifraff element. I never witnessed any criminal activity per se, but at the fraternity house we always had some interesting encounters. I think because there was obviously a lot of activity there, we just attracted curious people. We had a woman named Delicious stop by and solicit us, someone came by on a weekly basis to sell us stuff from a shopping cart, and often people would just walk up and ask us if they could hang out for a little while (we usually obliged--the funniest thing I have ever seen was a blind homeless guy play beer pong). Some of my friends didn't like that part of living in Highland, but I have always liked that part of city life. There is always something new and interesting every day.
