I am new here so I hope I don't show poor etiquette (or poor spelling for that matter). I applied for a great job near Sioux Falls and I may be getting it (my references were just called), my big concern is that my family and I (we are in our 40's and we have 2 sons, 4.5 and 2 years old) are Jewish and we have heard stories from some people that SD is not very welcoming to Jewish people (we are really not very observant but we still celebrate the holidays and such). I saw there is a temple in Sioux Falls but if the general populace will shun us or worse then I would rather not take the job. Can anyone out there give me any feedback? And please be brutally honest, if you feel that we would not find friends and be welcomed then I need to hear that (and I would appreciate it). I am not accusing anyone of being Anti-Semitic, I feel that everyone is entitled to their feelings and opinions, I just don't want to put my family into a bad situation.
I have lived in SD for over 60 yrs and have NEVER heard of anyone ever bashing or treating a person of a different religion badly.. I wouldn't worry about it -- what town near SF are you interested in? I do know that we have an excellent kosher packing plant here-- if anything I might give you crap for eating the wrong end of the animal( but entirely in jest)
I got a chuckle from that kosher line. I would actually agree with you about kosher food, I personally cannot stand it (and I don't eat it). We were looking at Sioux Falls itself because we are used to suburbia out here on the East Coast and Sioux Falls seems to have some interesting amenities.
Oy vey, where did you hear we were unwelcoming? Heavens no. There is even a synagogue in Rapid. Not sure about Sioux Falls. But the only thing I know about was some KKK action in the late 20s and nothing since. You might have a hard time keeping kosher, if you desire.
Hello SD4020 There actually is a temple in Sioux Falls. I heard thru friends and their friends. I don't know how reliable their info is but when I looked at a website that showed the % of jewish people per population SD was the only state with such a small amount that they could not show a number (they had to represent the amount with a z because otherwise the number would round to 0). So when I put those two things together I figured I better post and hope to get other responses. So far I am happy with the responses I am getting, it makes me feel better in case I do get the job.
I am not even from there but I have been to Sioux Falls a few times, South Dakota is full of nice people...Iowa, Nebraska, SD, ND and part of MN...a lot of nice people compared to east coast (we have nasty people out here!)
When I read your post, I had to reply back...I am Jewish and I was born and raised in Sioux Falls. My parents are from NYC, but moved here in the 70s. SF (and SD) is a great place to live, Jewish or otherwise. I have never felt looked down upon...people here are very welcoming, I promise you that! You willl not regret a move here...also, look into Mount Zion temple...awesome place.
