I'd also like to thank your husband for his service to our country. I remember the Viet Nam era well. Some good things and some bad things.

WEll, if it's any consolation to you~a lot of the people that live around here are still paying off college loans. Yours are probably much higher if you went to school over there, but I don't really know that. I guess the best thing you can do is go through the Argus Leader and find your apartment or house. Keep in mind that the utility bills on this side of the state are 35% greater then the national average. Your car insurance will be much cheaper here. Your entertainment will be a fraction of the cost that you're used to. Generally, food and other necessities are pretty much the same all over the U.S., but with shipping costs I'd imagine that those things are much more expensive over there. It's all up to you since you're the one who knows your financial situation and know how much you would like it here. Personally, I'd probably live in Hawaii if I could afford it.

Thanks Jammie, we are still on the fence, and I guess another big thing is that I don't know how much of a salary I would be making. I am a nurse (LPN) that has worked in the out-patient setting for 25 yrs. and I know that the pay would not be the same, but it would be helpful to get a good idea of how much I could be making. We seem to be leaning toward going to Sioux Falls, but I guess it is just scary. I have lived in Hawaii all my life, so moving is definately out of my comfort zone. We will be looking at the Argus leader on Sunday and looking for jobs for myself, then monday doing some calling to get a range of salaries. Then I guess we make our decision on Monday or soon after. If we move, you guys had better be there for us when we throw our welcoming party for ourselves..... you are all invited.

Thank you for the invitation and you know what~we'll be there. We would love to get together with everyone new and welcome them to our state. Party at Kao's house.

Since you are in the medical profession, you wouldn't have a problem at all finding employment.

Sanford Health

Sioux Valley Hospital and University of South Dakota Medical Center (http://www.usd.edu/wegner/partners/svh.htm - broken link)

I hope someone will correct me if this is wrong, but I believe these are the two hospitals in town. I think that Sanford Health bought out McKennan, but we still have Sx Valley. Is that correct or do I have that turned around?

There are also countless clinics and specialists in town. Sx. Falls covers a huge area for specialties. It's second to none in the area and the nearest care that's top notch is the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn. (That's the very best in our region)

If you get to the Sanford link, you may want to check out to see if the Surgical Center is listed there. It's relatively new and is an excellent facility and it's owned by Sanford.

As for wages, I wish I could help you on that. The only thing I can say is that the nursing profession is one of the best paid and most sought after (employers seeking employees) postions to be in around here. Most of the places of employment offer some pretty nice "hiring bonuses".

Sanford is a good place to check and the health system is expected to grow quite a bit in the next few years when the proposed research initiaves come to fruition and the research park gets built and established near I-29/I-229 interchange.

Also check out Avera McKennan hospital. The hospital is another big hospital (employing thousands of people) and would have nursing opportunities along with other oppotunities in the medical area. Go to www.mckennan.org and go to the Jobs tab on the homepage. This area has tools for you to read the company's philosophy and it will guide you to the possible openings in the hospital.

Avera McKennan is focusing on different areas than Sanford and is doing well with its heart institute and its behavioral health center. The hospital is also finding a niche with rural healthcare and working on advancing its service with satellite clinics and operations in other areas of Eastern South Dakota, Northwest Iowa, Southwestern Minnesota, Southern North Dakota (near Aberdeen, SD) and Northern Nebraska (Near Yankton, SD).

Sioux Falls has a number of outpatient clinics that you can consider along with nursing homes, VA, and Children's Care Hospital and School.

The medical area is a growing area with stability and a chance for growth and additional opportunity in Sioux Falls. Some of my classmates from high school went to school for nursing and have found jobs in Sioux Falls. In Sioux Falls, the medical positions pay well and nurses would have good pay and be able to live comfotably (with the salaries that are paid).

Chris19, Thanks a lot for the info, in trying to make our decision, it will be largely based on how much I can get paid, I know like I said that the cost of living is lower, but we want to be for sure, for sure, that all will be well. We pay a very low rent right now, because I rent from my parents and obviously that wouldn't be so there. How much is the rent there say for a 2 bedroom 1 bath house, or even a 3 bedroom home. Any info would be greatly appreciated. We do want to buy, because it is so affordable there, compared to Hawaii, but I guess we could rent if we had to.Thanks again everyone..

OOOPS, obviously after reading Chris' post, Sanford bought out Sioux Valley and not McKennan. Sorry for the misinformation.

Mahalo everyone, well I have submitted some applications to Sanford, and Mckennan hospitals and I guess I will have to wait and see what becomes of it. But if it was meant to be, then I guess it was and if not well then not. In Hawaii there is a saying that goes :If can, can, if no can then no can." Does that make sense to any of you??? Wish me luck, I will keep you posted.

Hi Kaohinani, I wish you luck in finding employment and in your move. I'm in the same boat when it comes to moving to sioux falls. Everyone here on the board has been wonderful and very helpful. My wife and I are going to Sioux Falls on vacation from Aug. 23-31 and are both looking forward to the trip. We're mainly going to look for a place to live as well as see her family. Do you anticipate when you may move should everything work out? We're moving there in mid October. We'll have to meet up or something and start the "new residents of sioux falls club".

I must warn you....Sanford is kind of slow on their hiring process ususally.....My wife applied there before we moved there and never heard for like 3 weeks, I had a friend that also used to work there, she said she applied like 3 times before she heard anything, McKennan was alot quicker, called in like 1 week or so.....

As a patient, I'd also say, "Go with McKennan". I have health insurance, but I owed Sanford money and sent them a check. They lost it or any record of it so I sent a copy of the cancelled check to them. Originally they told me they lost that, too. But somehow it showed up. It took about 3 months for my bill to be credited and straightened out. I called them repeatedly to try to get it straightened out. I was pretty disappointed in their billing department. I just happened to mention this to a friend and her son had a similar situation with them. Actually, I felt I got good care from them, but it kind of worried me as to how ineffecient their billing dept. is. All we can do is hope that their care dept. is much more efficient.
