No, it doesnt need to be changed. What would the point be in halving your own half if the offside is only the last quarter. Teams would have to hang back way too deep and make the game boring.

I would change the off side rule from 2 players to 1.

The original offside rule was much harsher, very similar to Rugbys no one in front of the ball was allowed to play it.

This was then changed to there being three defenders having to be in front when the ball is played, however this was still too weighted for the defenders, and it got changed to two defenders, which is the why it has been for over 80 years, and seems to be an almost perfect blend of defensive teamwork and tactics, vs attacking inguenity and personal skill

Moving to a fixed line position would take away a large part of the tactical element, there would be no offside trap (and the resulting goal attempt if that fails). It will deprive fans the fascination of a tactical battle, maybe you have a technically and spacially aware but aging defender (Terry) vs a fast forward that is full of running(Aguero), and is prepared to constantly go for runs, either trying to drag his defender with him to make space, or drop his man and steal half a yard. With a solid line, the defender would just hang back behind that line, and keep a careful watch on him, leading to less goals, whereas with a moving line, he has to be constantly aware, not only of the attackers postion, but also of his fellow defenders to ensure no one else is playing him onside

One of the biggest attractions for football is that as long as you are physically fit, it doesnt matter what type of body you are you can play, whereas for example you could be Basketballs biggest fan, but if you dont grow to 6 foot and plenty of change, you dont have a chance of playing it.

Football on the other hand, the only real restriction is that a keeper is generally tall, other than that every other postiom, it doesnt really matter if you are tall or short, faster vs stronger, agile or nimble you can play it, it is about blending a team of 11s strengths together and covering for each others weaknesses

Look at the two players that are generally considered the worlds best at the moment Ronaldo at 1.86m and Messi 1,69m are not similar in temrs of bdy, but theyu both play roughly the same postion, but by utilising their individual strengths they have both been able to become world class

A goal in Association Football is important, it is a game changing moment, and they are normally the result of an intense midfield battle, with both sides trying to cut out opposition players and put their player in to space (probably the best example of this is any Barcelona game from 2009-2012)

I watched a basketball game at Madison Square Garden, and yes it was fun to watch, but essentially it was all meaningless until about the last 5 minutes, the may as well have given each team 100 points at the start and just let them play for 5 minutes, there was no real celebration to a basket, just a small cheer

American Sport fans will tend to go wondering around more during games, wether to go get beers, toilets, food etc, where as Association Football fans normally dont leave the game except at half time, as there tends to be more tension, and the knowledge that something important can happen at any moment, and it can come from anywhere, whereas if the American fan misses a basket/hockey goal/touchdown/home run, its alright as they know there will be lots more

The rule is easy. Extremely easy. It is also easy to rule on.

There isnt that much official intervention. Not more than any other game. There is just as much in any typical American sport.
This exactly

There is nothing more beautiful than all of sports than a perfectly timed pass to a player who has perfect timing on a run into open space and scores after a 1 v 1 with the keeper. You take away offside or change it, you take away the most amazing thing in all of sports.

Why does a rule in the world's most popular sport need to be changed? It's the world's most popular sport and it isnt even close. To think it needs to be changed to cater to your lack of understanding shows stupidity and arrogance. Its no different than being a racist or a bigot. It stems from one thing and one thing only - ignorance.

Please..the rule creates all sorts of questionable calls. It should be a hard line as in hockey..enter that area before the ball and your offside...period. God forbid we should actually let the team on offense have a scoring chance.

Great sport...stupid rules. Mexico 3 straight 0-0 home games..yea thats great for the sport.

Mexico drawing 0-0 is hardly the offside rules fault. Maybe they should stay on their feet and try and score more and spend less time rolling around on the ground ?

Its the rule of the sport though. Its followed and used all around the world. Why should it be changed because a few people don't like it?

Its like me saying that I seen an NFL game and thought it was boring. So they should now use a tennis ball instead of a football.
