they don't know the sport as well as the Irish and German and other commentators - I listen to the games on radio and really like Tommy Smyth

So? It is a foreign sport. What I mean to say is that it is not focused on the United States like (American) football, baseball, basketball and hockey are. The focus of soccer is elsewhere and is honestly not focused on any specific country.

Not really, to be honest. Unfortunately, our talent in the announcing booth is just not that solid as compared to soccer announcers in other countries. I would rather have the best announcers, regardless of which country they are from.

They've tried having American commentators and they are just ridiculous. I'm an American and I prefer to not have Americans do the commentary, they try to treat it like any other American sport and focus way too much on pop psychology ("But is his head in the game? Can he step up to the plate?") instead of just discussing the game like the British guys do.

Have American commentary and you get this:

YouTube - Riise freekick, funny American commentary

One of the worst commentators was tennis player Chris Evert doing the China-USA finals at USA '99. 0% play-by-play.

We had American commentators in 2006 and it was unbearable. I had to switch over and watch the games on the Spanish stations despite the fact I speak very little Spanish.

Martin Tyler is one of the masters of his craft. We are lucky to have the British commentators on ESPN.

When I watched American football back in England I certainly wouldn't have wanted an Englishman commentating on the games and the same rules apply here.

I dont understand that irish guy....he sounds like a drunk leprachuan. Very difficult to follow. And yes...watching it on Univision or another spanish channel is just sooo much more enticing. You FEEL the energy much MUCH more. Dramatic difference !

Espn learned the hard way in 2006 when they they had Dave Obrien do the world cup calls-----he tried hard but just always seemed unsettled and out of his element-----it would be similar to Marv Albert calling rodeo action.

People are going to have to take what you can get. I just don't understand watching coverage in Spanish if you don't understand the calls and commentary, the heck is the point of watching then?

Why do you need commentary to watch sports? You see what is happening without someone telling you. I watch games on Spanish channels all the time and just mute the games.
