I know the teams can't play forever, but how terrible is it for two teams to play 120 minutes of a game, and then have it decided by penalty kicks? I never liked this rule, especially in a setting like the World Cup, the game should be decided by actually playing the game, and it puts too much pressure on individual players, when its a team game!

120 minutes of running around a 120 yard long and 80 yard wide is a lot! I think penalty kicks is a way to make a game end asap with a winner since the players are obviously very tired by this time. I really hate this however. It's not a fair win in my book.

After 30 minutes of OT, the average player has run 10+ miles. While these players are some of best athletes in the world, the game would suffer if you kept pushing them to exhaustion. You have to decide it without killing them.

No one likes to see a game decided on PKs. But, there is not much of an alternative. After 120 minutes of play, the players have ran between 10 to 12 miles and have beaten the hell out of each other.

The only thing that could really be done is to allow 3 more subs and let them play an hour of ET instead of 30 minutes. Even then it is more about endurance than skill.

They deserve that amount of pressure when you have a look at what alot of them get payed.

I think is the perfect way to end the game.

Forgive my ignorance, but would a world cup final also be determined this exact way?

Yes, if it comes down to that. Several finals have been determined by PKs including the last WC in 2006.

I don't see the problem. The point of a tiebreaker is to get the game over with after it has become obvious even extra time isn't going to do it.

It sure as hell beats the sudden death crap in the NFL.At least it's fair to both sides.

The way we did it in youth soccer was a shootout similar to ice hockey. The offensive player got the ball at the top of the penalty circle and they got to dribble the ball. Additionally, the goalie got to come out of the goal once the whistle was blown instead of having to just stand there on the goal line. IMO this is much more of a true contest of skill between the offensive player and the goalie than penalty kicks, which is really more of a guessing game. I'd rather the game be decided by a clear contest of skill than a contest to see whose team guessed correctly more often.
