Ironic response considering the sadly and utterly predictable post directly above yours.

It already is a major sport. It has attendance averages right on par with the NBA and NHL and the MLS is othe fastest growing professional sports league in the history of the United States. Right now, there is a 50 million dollar fee for an expansion team to enter MLS. Guys like Arthur Blank, Albert Puyols, and Mark Cuban have expressed interest and even taken steps towards MLS ownership.

In addition, companies like Microsoft, Volkswagon, and Corona are paying over 1 million dollars per year to advertise on MLS jerseys.

It's already a major sport and growing by the day.

Oh please. Your attempt to equate MLS attendance with NHL and NBA is alternately laughable and pitiable.

Last full season attendance...

NBA: 21,094,015
NHL: 20,907,061
MLS:4,002,053

So yeah, congratulations on having 20% of the overall attendance of each of the nation's "also-ran" leagues. I mean, it's nice and all that MLS games have almost the same per-game attendance. Get back to us when there's enough fan interest to do that for an 82-game season.

So will soccer ever be popular or is it doomed to be unpopular in america like all non-american sports? Does rugby stand a better chance of penetrating the american sports cultural wall?

I don't hate soccer, I just don't play anymore. I think it's more of a collective disinterest than anything else- we basically have American football, baseball, and NASCAR. The other sports are shown on premium cable/satellite sports channels though.

No. Americans at least understand soccer and many of us played it when we were school-aged. I'd estimate at least 90% of Americans don't even understand rugby and virtually nobody has played it. Many colleges have rugby teams, but it's considered a club sport and is not sanctioned or governed by the NCAA.

Soccer already is popular, you dont seem to be getting that. Just because it is not as popular as football and baseball does not mean it is not popular.

Without going too far off topic, I think USA Rugby is a sleeping giant, and though it will probably never even be as big as hockey here, it could definitely become a solid niche sport in maybe 20 years, and we could field a competitive international side.
