Ligue 1 is cited as one of the top 5 leagues in Europe.

Yet they don't seem to have the same penetration internationally as other leagues (when I say leagues I mean league leaders).

ESPN in america has rights to the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga and but not Ligue 1.

Also despite the wealth of the nation and the league they have comparatively lackluster turns in Europe, why is that?

Well, there's the fact that Lyon dominated the Ligue 1 in the noughties, to such extent that it became a very boring competition. Despite this era being over now, I guess many people still have this notion of the Ligue 1 being a boring competition.

Also, the French teams never did very well in the European Cup and the Champion's League. Marseille won in 1993, and Monaco (2004), Saint-Etienne (1976) and Stade de Reims (1956, 1959) reached the finals. And that's it. Pretty lame for such a big country. Even the Dutch and the Portuguese did much better.

As an American the English premier league is WAY more interesting..the EPL is the best league in the world with all of the history and drama. Also we speak the same language and there's plenty of coverage with Fox Sports Soccer and ESPN. Even if there was no coverage though i'd stream the EPL before i'd watch the French league on tv.

When you have so many leagues, only a few can be popular.

On top of that, teams in the EPL, La Liga, and Serie A have marketed to Americans for years and even done tours and now several teams come here every year. I dont recall a French team ever coming to the U.S. Most people can name a couple of teams from each of these three leagues but very few Americans could name a French team because they have taken the time to market within the United States.

Popularity comes from marketing. You cant expect something to be popular if the product was never marketed.

I like French football, especially recently with it becoming a highly competitive and high quality league, I urge people to watch a PSG v Marseille match, great rivalry. Teams like Lille, Lyon, PSG and Marseille are quality sides.

Theres really only Lyon when we talk about top clubs in europe in France. Same for germany with Bayern but the bundesliga has a larger buzz because of more spectators/better fanculture and a larger footballing population.
England has what? 5-6 top clubs.
Spain: 2 clubs but they are really really top notch
Italy: has about 3-4 top clubs, even though inter and milan arnt doing so good, they are still financial giants and major clubs.

Lyon aren't looking like they will win the french league without a fight these days though, after the SPL and the EPL the french league is the league I keep up to date with the most, plenty of quality in France.

I actually prefer watching a random Ligue 1 game over a random EPL any day. I just like the flow, style and quality of soccer, and it is also really nice that pretty much anybody can win the title from year to year. And, even when Lyon had their long title run, below them there was a lot of movement from 2nd-20th place from year to year.

If you're just looking for success in the Champions League, then of course English club football has French club football well beat. But to me there should be more than simple success (bandwagon jumping) when deciding what and who to watch.

As mentioned, the EPL has been marketed so much more on an international level than French football. And the fact that England speaks English helps a lot. Many won't watch French (or even Spanish/Italian) football simply because of that. Also, the leagues in France are focused more on French people. If you look at the rosters of the top teams they have much more of a French lean than EPL clubs do an English lean. And, fan wise, people in France tend to follow their own teams much more than international clubs, while other countries just haven't really followed it much.

French football has had plenty of history and drama. Just because you don't know nearly as much about it doesn't mean that there is a lack of history and drama. Best league in the world, sure the EPL has Ligue 1 beat easily, but the amount of history and drama in those respective leagues can be argued.
