Paris and its suburbs have a population of 12,292,895 inhabitants, Greater London is between 8 and 12 million.

Only one, despite being as big as London PSG is the only relevant team. Red Star and Racing play in the third tier, but their following isn't even remotely comparable to that of PSG.

In France, cities have only one big team.
Nobody outside of Paris area would accept to see several teams for Paris.

PSG were formed in 1970 I believe, who did Parisians root for before then?

I think the bold is a big answer to the question re: PSG's support. It isn't like the big clubs in England, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc. where clubs have existed for 100+ years and you support teams your great great grandfather did, so the tradition and history just aren't there. Also as another person mentioned, football in general is not as ingrained in the culture in France as it is in other countries

Correct me if I've forgotten some but the only massive metropolitan areas that come close to London's number of big clubs are Istanbul, Buenos Aires, Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, and Moscow.

Internationally France were very successful not so many years ago, and there was (and still is) much interest in this sport.

I'd never really thought about teams in Paris and am surprised that there is only one top level team, and a fairly new one at that.
