Cruyff

Nothing else needs to be said

However for those that are ignorant, was one of the architets off total football, led ajax to three european cups in a row, enabled ajax to dominate the Dutch division (they were mid table before he came) led the Netherlands to a world cup final, that by all rights they should have won, and then to another won, which was a air result them coming second.

Then went to Barcelona and his legacy there after also becoming manager

It is not a big leap to say that if it wasnt for Cruyff then Messi wouldn't be half the player he is

World Cup succes is not a terribly good measure of how good a player is, take George Best, it wouldnt have matered how good he was, Northern Irleand were never going to be qualify for the world cup, let alone win it

I agree with your sentence above, but find it hypocritical in light of you naming Zidane who is not top 10 all time, let alone top 5 or top 1.

The pretty well universally accepted top 4 tend to be: Maradona, Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer ...

Duncan Edwards perhaps? Just how good would he have become if he didn't perish in an air crash at 21? :-(

I disagree with that mate.

Zidane is up there with the best. He is in most peoples top 5. Normal top 5 would be Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane and Messi. That's almost the same as mine:

1. Messi
2. Zidane
3. Pele
4. Di Stéfano
5. Cruyff

That being said, I tend to change my top 5 around sometimes. Usually between Cruyff, Di Stéfano and Maradona but the top 3 stay the same.

Wrong, pre-messi virtually all lists had a top 5 of maradona, pele, cruyff, di stefano and beckenbauer ... other tops including eusebio, zico, maybe best ... toss in messi now days .... zidane is probably/possibly top 10 but no way in hell is he top 5 ...

If you think that Messi and Zidane are the two greatest ever you are both ignorant and probably under 30 years old. No one has them that high. Messi with some more years and some success internationally could go that high ... but Zizou? Top 10 quite possibly but virtually no one lists him top 5. Again the basically unanimous top three is Maradona, Pele and Cruyff and two of Beckenbauer, Eusebio and DiStefano generally round out any top 5.
