I'll go with Diego Maradona. A man that nearly single-handedly (yep, pun intended) won the 86 World Cup and otherwise was blessed with fabulous technical skills. Admittedly, his personality was not exactly the most pleasant one.
My second would be Zinedine Zidane (still consider him better than Messi). Third would be Michael Laudrup.

I admire the way you did not mention Pele. Most people will just say Pele without considering anyone else.
