MLS set a new average attendance record in 2012 at 18,807 fans per game.

MLS is now 7th worldwide for average attendance, ahead of Ligue 1 (France), Chinese Super League (China), and Eredivisie (Netherlands) in the top 10.

I have to admit, when DC United were winning all those MLS championships back in the day, I took it for granted, they made it seem so easy! But now that we haven't been back in the playoffs for several years, I won't take this for granted. This year will be special! Vamos United!

I am a total noob to soccer...but I think the MLS is great. They may have just lost a key playoff battle , but there is A LOT of love in this town for the local team (Sporting Kansas City). They have an excellent new stadium. They stand out from the other sports team in this town because the ownership is local and are committed to spending money to field a good team; they are also slick marketers (unlike the marketing arms of the Royals and Chiefs, which are stuck in the Jurassic Period). SKC owners are tech guys...and it shows in the in-game experience at Livestrong Sporting Park.

I grew up in a hockey town (Buffalo, NY) but I could definitely see MLS surpassing the NHL at some point because it is a lot like the NHL in America. It has a devoted following in some hotbed towns (like American NHL markets), but is almost completely ignored in other cities. Both the MLS and the NHL don't have marquee TV contracts (unlike the the other major sports). The NHL is beset with labor problems and is intent on killing itself. Unlike hockey, the sport of soccer is popular with youth throughout the United States and not just a few northeastern US, Michigan, or Minnesota cities. If I were the MLS, I would focus on overtaking the NHL in America. Work on a decent TV contract, avoid the labor issues, and keep growing the sport in the markets that work.
