Still nothing wrong with just naming a club FC or SC and then allowing the nickname of the club to evolve organically.
I agree.

From what I read, the name came from the specific type of rhinos at one of the zoos in the region. If the name is connected with the area, I am fine with that. But if it doesn't, then no.

As for having FC or SC in the name, I could dig that with the addition of a team nickname. Vancouver Whitecaps FC are a good example.
Hampton Roads Rhinos sounds terrible. There's something about traditional American arena team names that throws me off. I don't mind the FC or SC tag after their city name since they are a football or sporting club and then possibly rebranding after a few years when the fan culture has decided on a they chant at matches.

exactly

i mean, how do you give a football club a name (rhinos? lol) when they haven't even adapted an identity yet? If my city was getting a football club I'd much rather have them just have FC or SC after the city. Then let the nickname evolve organically.

You might want to read my post again. I stated that at one point, the Hampton Roads Rhinos were a proposed NHL team. Hockey.

Maybe you should study the arena league to see which of their names are really awful: Shock, Rush, VooDoo, Soul, Power, Blaze, Storm, etc. MLS doesn't touch that.

"Earthquakes" is among the oldest surviving names in top-level soccer in the US and Canada, along with Sounders and Whitecaps (1974), and was chosen by newspaper polling of fans. "Impact" was deemed appropriate because it is a word which requires no translation between French and English, which is important in Montreal. Wilmington is a coastal town so I think the "Hammerheads" connection should be obvious to anyone.

I have no idea if there are rhinos in upstate New York, though.
