I thought Impact was just to reflect all the diving their players do so they Impact with the ground all the time.

Wilmington is a coastal town so I think the "Hammerheads" connection should be obvious to anyone.
So there is no connection with the name Impact and Montreal?

Does there really have to be?

Just sayin', they're sports teams. It's not like the name has to have a meaning.

So you'd be okay if the Dallas Cowboys were called Dallas Volcanoes, Dallas Mavericks were called Dallas Lake Monsters, Dallas FC were called Dallas Flying Squirrels and Dallas Stars called Dallas Biscuits?

They pretty much sound like acceptable American type names to me.

No, but that's only because all those names have already been established with a meaning and has history.... Well, other than FC Dallas. If they were to change their name tomorrow, it wouldn't mean a damn thing to me or most of the Metroplex, frankly.

All I'm saying is, mascots and nicknames don't HAVE to have to be relate-able to the city/state/region. Are Jaguars relevant to Northeast Florida? Are Hawks only flying around Atlanta? Sometimes, it's ok to just have a generic animal or whatever mascot, ya know?

Relevent to the history of the Jacksonville Zoo, as it used to house the oldest living jaguar in North America.

There are a species of hawk in that area, so technically yes. From what I read, its mainly the Red-tailed Hawk and the Red-shouldered Hawk.

Jacksonville, I could give you that, but it's still in the zoo. You don't see jaguars popping up on the outskirts of the city.

And there are hawks pretty much everywhere, making it a pretty generic name.

why the need for these fake nicknames rather than something organic that happens over time? Just putting a club in a city and then giving it a silly name like Earthquakes or Jaguars or Thundercats is pretty lame.

We actually have a history in this country of organic nicknames in a lot of our sports. Take for instance the Brooklyn Dodgers. Their were originally the Brooklyn Bridegrooms(a lot of their players had just been married) then became known as the Superbas. When they moved to Easton Park in Brooklyn they became known as the Trolly Dodgers because how difficult it was for their supporters to dodge trolly lines to get to the park. Then it was shortened to Dodgers.
