A lot of players never won the world cup and are considered the world's greats (Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Morientes, Paolo Maldini, Platini (as a player not a corrupt Uefa president) and more

All these players are considered top 15 best football players of all-time.
True. I must admit I slightly misinterpreted the OP's question .

I thought it meant: do they have to win a WC to be THE all-time greatest. So not one of the all time greatest (which Messi already is of course), but the all-time greatest (which are still, for me, Maradona and then Zidane).

Actually you pretty much had it right. I did mean THE greatest , or at least top 5 ever, but better than manyof the guys mentioned so far.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Everyone are naming great players but there can only be one greatest. Its Messi for me. Don't have to win the World Cup to be the greatest in my opinion.
