I have a hard time watching it, but I don't think it was malicious. It should have been a penalty, and was definitely a dangerous play, but it appeared he was going after the ball and put himself in a bad position.

Just my thoughts.

I didn't see it live, only watched the video link without sound. I guess I didnt think he went after his knee on purpose (purposefully trying to hurt him), but maybe I couldn't see well on the small screen I was watching.

How could that have been a penalty? Red card, for sure but it was well outside the box.

Most American's I know still use penalty for free kick. Force of habbit I guess!
