I think its down to the sport being so big. Almost every nation in the world has a football league. A draft just wouldn't work. The transfer market is alright. Big clubs will have more money. Its the same with leagues.

Why would we want a draft when we have increasing spectator numbers, huge tv deals and 90% of the world following the sport religiously? Must be doing something right.

I am bitter because I love Shelbourne :| Shams arent having that great a season. Its good to have different winners and Irish football is in a jocker because of the FAI and that other Irish team in Scotland that every Catholic bigot supports. Did I mention how much I hate the GAA too ? lol

Salary cap is a great idea. The draft is the worst thing I have ever seen over here. I never once cared enough about the draft to see who we get. Its a college thing, you dont want a 22 or 23 year old. You want a 15 year old coming through your youth system. You may get lucky from time to time with youngsters in the draft but thats it. Youth systems are what is needed. But yeah anyway, salary caps for sure so Rangers going bust again cant happen but I doubt I would see it in my lifetime in Europe unless FIFA and UEFA mandate but at that rate it would probably be anti competition in the EU and we all know how corrupt UEFA is and the same rules that apply to say Shelbourne do not in any way apply to teams like Utd or Barca.

The handbook is called Big Jock Knew.

This article might help. If not, I can post a few other contemporaneous articles like the one where Billy McNeill conceded that knowledge of what was going on was an open secret at Celtic.

The draft system over here wouldn't work for the simple reason, that football training is not done by schools/universities, so who are you drafting from?

People play local Sunday league football, and if they are lucky and talented enough they will get scouted by one of their local teams, if they are skilled enough again, they will get scouted from there to one of the bigger teams

The academies are paid for by the football club (with a smallish grant available), they put all the time and effort into training these players for a lot of years and they are the ones that reap the success of their training (or clubs they get loaned to do anyway)

To change the system would require not only a huge overhaul in the education system, but also agreement from virtually every world government (yeah right, like thats gonna happen)

In the EPL to some degree you get rewarded for your success; an argument can be made you get over rewarded which makes it very difficult for others to compete, whereas in the NFL/NBA you get rewarded for failure

Its always struck me as funny for a country that hates the world socialist, that their professional sporting leagues are run along the most socialist principles of any league.

At the end of the day football has evolved very organically all over the world through progressive reward for success and punishment for failure, through a system of leagues that allow even the smallest Sunday league team to theoretically compete for the Premier league in the future, where as the NFL is a closed system of franchises that are guaranteed reward no matter what their level of playing success, as they cant get relegated, only moved to another city (seriously WTF, what happens to their supporters do they still support it, or find a nearer team)

Neither system is perfect, and they both have their merits and their minus points, but they are a result of their circumstances, and change either system to the other would be so difficult to do as be near impossible
