If Mexico are terrible, which they have looked like for a while, why did Mexico win the Gold Cup?
Let me think... Maybe because it's a cup with 2 possible winners almost always? Seriously, how is that cup important? There are quite a few soccer fans in Europe or even in South America that don't even know what the Gold Cup is about.
Panama beat them easily, they are struggling right now against Canada, trying to get a shot in, it looks like they can get the ball downfield but cannot shoot.
Well if it is an easy tournament the US should win.
There have been 11 of these gold cup tournaments since 1991
MX has won the most with 6 to go with 1 runner up and 1 third place
The US has won 4 times to go with 4 runner ups and 2 third place finishes
The only time that neither the US or MX didn't win was in 2000 - Canada had to win a small bracket to even qualify, they then advanced over Korea on a coin flip to get out of group play - promptly upset mexico in the 1st knockout game and went on to win the whole thing ..... the US played well in group but lost in the 1st knockout game in PKs to Columbia who ended up losing to Canada in the finals
This event normally draws B teams from the US & MX and they still typically fair pretty well

I like this year's US B team. I wouldn't want them starting at this point, but there are a few that should be on the team that goes to Brazil.
They looked like a completely different team last night against Martinique.
I enjoyed the game.
I didn't even know Martinique had a football team. You learn something new every day.
