that's what I do. When Dempsey was with Fulham i supported Fulham. Now I think its going to be Sunderland and Stoke for me(and Roma).
I want to see Americans do well in the best leagues in the world.
Simply attaching to players and not teams is not the experience that some people are looking for, and particularly if you are in a big city.
Here in Austin you could support Chelsea and watch every single match they play this year with 30-50 likeminded fellows at a regular pub. The same with Liverpool/Man United. Tottenham you would have 20-40. There's even a grop of 20 or so Hammers fans who gather for games. Arsenal? We pull 150-200 for every single weekend match, midweek matches we have 70-125. Imagine having a regular pub where 200 likeminded fans are standing, cheering, singing the same songs sung on the terrace. It may not be the same as being there, but it is an experience worth having.
Even apart from this big group experience though, there is something to be said for having a club that is your own, an affinity for the history and the pride of that club. Being loyal and following them through thick or thin. Not just bandwagon jumping the latest flavor, not just hopping to whoever is winning or wherever it is that player X plays for.
Sure, watch the games with American players that is great. But I guarantee you that you will not have the depth of experience on a weekly basis that I have, whether I am doing it sitting on my couch alone, or down at our pub with 200 of my buddies.

I sort of have that with Dundee United, a club I have supported since i was young, and a club i support because that is where my parents are from (and where i spent 5 years of my childhood). I go back every couple years and go to a few matches. I still remember my first United match.
The biggest difference between my experience and yours is that the only time me, my brothers and dad go to watch a United game at a pub is when they are playing Celtic or Rangers (when Rangers were in the SPL) and then it is usually a bar full of Celtic fans and then just us in the corner.

I have been supporting Arsenal since before there WAS an MLS, and although I was an original member of the Texian Army and a seaon ticket holder for the Dynamo for a couple of years, why should one watch a clearly, and vastly inferior product just because it is local? MLS vs. EPL is not apples vs. apples. It is the equivelent of me telling you to stop supporting whatever NFL team you like because you have a DII college or a strong high school program in your neighborhood. "Support your local American Football team!"
I love the game, as I am not a glory hunter it doesn't have to be the "best of the best" for me. MLS is a good league with some good football played. There is something great about watching players that you know arent playing solely for the money, unlike the whole Chelsea, Man City squad etc. For me anyway, different strokes for different folks ...
