Is their any reason i should be interested in the Soccer match between Mexico and h U.S. tonight. Like is this a meaningful league and game within the league. Are any of the players world reknown does it have any ramifications on the teams I always hear about in Europe asouth America like Brazil, Manchester etc..

How do you watch a soccer game. i can watch sports where there isn alot of scoring. i like hockey and can have full interest in a 0-0 game because I understand the flow of the game (off sides) the importance of quality shots on goal and i recognize good defense. Is soccer the same in anyway, what do I look for in a scoreless soccer game to judge how my team might be doing without relying on a score.

Ive tried watching soccer in the past and get bored fast. I would like to think the game tonight has implicatons for either Mexico or the US but i know nothing about how the particular league is sutctured and how the outcome might effect standings, playoffs world cup (if its even in that class of soccer).

Give me a reason to be excited and tell me how to enjoy the game on TV tonight

Its a World Cup qualifier so its extremely important. Mexico are huge rivals of the US and hte Mexicans are down on their form the last year with some very poor results though both teams had bad runouts a few days ago. Expect to see a lot of diving from the Mexicans ... its just what they do.

You have to watch with an open mind like I did when I went to my first baseball match. There is a LOT going on in soccer that people fail to look at when they dont take interest in the game and what regular fans of the sport take for granted and dont talk that much. Watch the flow of the game.

In theory there should be 2 to 3 goals with Mexico being so bad of late but the US are without 4 players that they need.

I'm no expert on this but from what I've been hearing, Mexico is in real danger of actually not qualifying so this is HUGE for them compared to the US where they are very close to qualifying.

A tie wouldn't really do Mexico that much good.. they need wins..

So Boner,

you like Hockey right? You get the gist of basketball right? Then you can "get" soccer, it's not fundamentally that different.

It's free flowing, where players must attack and defend (generally, depends on position) and use a variety of tactics to get the ball (or puck in the goal).

Only thing is, because the field is MUCH WIDER and you use your less dexterous feet, scores are at a premium. BECAUSE OF THAT, so much pressure rides on that goal or goals so the SET UP OF THE ATTACK (including SHOTS ON GOAL) has to be PERFECT and the goals are that much more meaningful.

Like hockey it's all about players being able to be quick and nimble while being sharp in one on one battles of possession. Only real difference is the BUILD UP takes longer. That's what you gotta get used to. Think, ok "how is the team gonna cut through defense, who is good on the break, who's got the razzle dazzle to confuse the crap out of defenders."

As for defense; Are they marking zone or man on man, how many people do we keep at the back. Do they try to play route 1 ball, or do they get fancy screen and roll type theatrics.

Similar to stuff you've heard on the hardwood and the rink right? Basic same principles apply, it's just with feet.

You just gotta get used to the pace of the game, and it's best if you have some sort of reason to be interested so when more World Cup qualifiers roll around, and definetly when the World Cup happens, watch US Matches. It'll take a little bit of time, but like I said. If you can understand hockey, soccer isn't totally different aside from the pace.
