Every world cup there is talk about how this is the time that these dark horse African teams will finally shine. I will believe it when I see it, they always underperform (compared to expectations) in the World Cup. There are definately some talents, and I don't know quite why they don't do better. I am sure that infrastructure has some to do with it ... but I still don't think any get past the QF and think that overall we will once again talk about the disapointing performance by African teams.

I'll second Todd's sentiments. Other than Ghana, most African teams have underachieved in the World Cups. I don't see Cameroon emerging from Group A. Cote D'Ivoire is very respectable, but they could be surprised by Japan and also have a very tough top of the group with Greece and Colombia. Nigeria's been talked about as an up-and-coming team that could make a lot of noise for the past 15 years but hasn't done anything since 1998. Ghana is the class of the African nations, but has the disadvantage of playing in the Group of Death. Algreria is the only African nation I can see making it to the Round of 16.
Ghana always surprise in the world cup but disappoint in African championships. I can't see Cameroon doing anything special. Nigeria, CIV and Algeria can surprise if they play like the qualifiers and African championships
