Soccer isn't an 'American term' for football its actually English and as it is an English sport then 'perhaps' you continentals are in fact the ones calling the sport the wrong name! (its perhaps lucky for you that the English ALSO called it football AS WELL AS Soccer. :-)

Oh god, Americans are so thrilled to have that little tidbit of historical fact and will be using it accordingly. LOL

At least abroad they have the sense to not call it soccer. That's the point. Who cares who invented it. The point is soccer is a goofy word.

Overall though who cares!

This is what gets me. When the US does something different, the world calls the US stuck up or stupid for it. If one American even so slightly opens his mouth about how another country should do something like the US, he is called a "igorant american" "loudmouth", the double standards are ridiculous.

We can call it whatever the hell we want, because its nothing more than a word. We have a sport called Football here... so what?

If you want something direct, in Spanish it should be "pelota de pie" or in Portuguese it should be "bola de pé". That way you guys can have your literal translation of a foot and a stupid ball.

Why stop there? Hockey shouldn't be called hockey.. it should be called stick puck.

It's rather pathetic how much people care about what Americans do.

Eh, not do much to do with blacks (see Washington and Detroit) but lack of interest + weak ownership.

Atlanta also has a reputation for being a jorible pro sports town.

Who cares what it is called? It is called different things in different countries. Italy calls it calcio, Germany has their word, soccer (an English invented word) is used in America. It doesn't bloody matter, it's the same great sport.

The NFL is a manufactured tv show for the television, people talk more about commercials than they do about the short amount of action they see after the quintillion replays and commercials. NFL is a joke. And the ogres that act in that tv show are so fat they no longer look like the average homo sapiens.

Here in Florida people do not even talk about the NFL.

Noone cares about the NFL.

You must be kidding- try telling that to the people that jam into those stadiums for every game and cheer and chant and yell loudly for their teams and get insanely excited about their teams and the action they see on the field. Every American sport is broken up and filled with commercials when broadcast on TV- that sucks, I do wish all of our sports were like soccer where you see each half uninterrupted. But that's just not how they are, it is not anything specific to NFL football!

Its better than soccer where the players uniforms are the commercials.

At least in American sports, one can tell which team is playing and not have to consult a sponsorship handbook.

Is Arsenal an English team or does it actually play in the United Arab Emirates?

Football is a completely legit name for American Football. Some of the most important plays are kicking/special teams. All the NFL top scorers are kickers!

I will admit though, there are a lot of commercials. Watching a game on a DVR and skipping the commercials is glorious.
