Perhaps in your crowd? I haven't gotten that at all. In fact, the knowledgeable foreigners I know have suggested to me that while the United States isn't on a level say as Germany the play of US international soccer has improved through the years. They know we don't astound everybody with technical ability but we do the best we can and can compete with the best.
In a way they do see our 'style' and believe it does us well.

No one gets red faced about it, ok. Stop exaggerating. At best it's just silly mocking over the rather cutesy name for the sport in the US. How would you like it if Brits started calling football 'hand egg' in jest because they refused to call a game where you don't use your feet, football. The funny thing is that they DO call it hand egg for giggles. Do you care? I doubt it? Why? Perhaps you proly have a superiority complex about not caring what silly foreigners think of our greatest sport.
So, don't chalk up the mocking of the word soccer to an "inferiority complex". You sound like a jingoistic dolt. It's simply that foreigners care little for 'hand egg' because they're ignorant of it.

It's not a big deal anyway. It's just a word to describe the game. I was just explaining why I personally don't like the word. I don't like the way it sounds but it's completely irrelevant to me where it comes from or who uses it nowadays.
Of course its silly but nearly the whole world calls it football. Not just that there is no equivalent to it in another languages other than English (Italy? Anyone?).
Yes, calcio. In Finnish it's jalkapallo, literally translating football into Finnish. In Hungarian it's labdarúgás, the game you play with your foot.

I think you're mixing up the fact that foreign soccer fans don't really care but will mock what they think us an ugly word for their favorite sport.
I personally think the word sounds incredibly kid-ish. Soccer haters in the States even make fun of soccer because the sport is called such a "wussy" name. It's just not a good name.
But in the end it doesn't really matter. It was called soccer in Australia several years ago but now it's known as football. I think the same might happen here. It might be called football soccer soon, idk. My mates and I call it football and a lot of foreigners talk to us about football as though we are calling it that now.

Real soccer fans know that "soccer" has many names around the World
In Brazil is called "Futebol" in Italy is called "Calcio" in Germany is called "Fussball"
Again, real soccer fans don't care about the name
