Zidane was the last great of the 21st century. Brazilian Ronaldo a close 2nd.

After that, there's just a big gap that has yet to be filled. Messi and Ronaldo just can't win a WC and Ronaldinho just fell off the map. We mostly have great teams now; Italy in '06, Spain in '10 and Germany in '14. Same with the Dutch.

I don't think you need to win a WC to be great.. Ronaldo is individually brilliant.. I definitely think he is probably the best since Zidane/Ronaldo along with Messi

Some brilliant players will never win a WC because their team can't help. CR7 is good example, Portugal don't have the collective quality to win a WC. Bale is another example, even if he could play for England.

The problem becomes when one of players in the competitive teams don't win a WC. It's certainly frustrating. No matter what Messi does and how brilliant he is, Maradona will always be considered better for many because he led Argentina to a WC win.

Maradonna single handedly won the WC for Argentina though. Great great players can make the team better

Maradona was the example I was going to bring up too. He led that team to victory and he also led Napoli from a poor second string team facing relegation to a rich championship winning one.

He will always be the best. Zidane is another one.

Yeah.. Barcelona without Messi would have still been great - not invincible as they were, but still great!

Same problem with Cruijff. The only reason some people put him below Pele and Maradona is because he didn't win a WC for his country.
