Because the FIFA ranking is comprised of results over the past 4 years. For any new result that is taken into account, the oldest result is discarded. That helps teams like Costa Rica, Belgium, Chile etc. because the results that are discarded were probably worth a lot less than the new results that are added to their ranking. This is also why a team can lose points in the ranking despite winning a game.

What???

What major tournament has England won since 1966???

Also, this was the first time that England have been eliminated from a World Cup at the group stage since 1958!!!

Why hasn't England won any tournaments since 66? I mean not even a Euro?

Why don't they go as Great Britain and recruit Gareth Bale, game, set, match there.

No, England never won an Euro. Fifa limits Great Britain to U23 I believe.

Ah I see. That makes sense. And Bale doesn't want to be nationalized as English? Shame he'll probably never be in a cup then. Even if he did he might just be like Drogba or Eto of Cameroon

1. Germany
2. Argentina
3. Holland
4. Belgium
5. Brazil
6. Chile
7. Colombia
8. France
9. Uruguay
10. Costa Rica
11. USA
12. Mexico
13. Switzerland
14. Spain
15. Croatia
16. Italy
17. England
18. Portugal
19. Bosnia-Herzegovina
20. Greece

Brazil is really difficult to rank. They got killed against Germany, got beat by Netherlands in the worst officiated game I have ever see, but beat Chile and Colombia. I thought Chile played well, but I thought Brazil played better. Maybe France is higher than I have them, but I thought there were a number of highly thought of teams that looked bad...Spain, Italy, England, Portugal...maybe Croatia a little lower. I increased all CONCACAF teams, as they showed they were better than people think. Just my opinion.

FIFA rankings remain a joke. The current rankings put too much emphasis on the final few games of the tournament but not accounting for performances won and lost by horrid officiating.

News flash, folks...Colombia is the best team in South America.

That's why the ranking is based on results and not perception. There is so much variation based on how the players come to that game that day, it can't be measured. It's a mistake to assume just because Brazil was beaten 7x1 by Germany, every team ranked in the top near Germany should automatically beat Brazil as well, it's just not true. I see individuals claiming Colombia is the best SA team right now, yet Brazil's beating them in the WC was much easier than against Chile. Here is a fact of previous number 1 ranked teams that proves football ranking are a very broad picture at best:

Three of the last four teams to win the World Cup have gone out in the following group stage (France 2002, Italy 2010, Spain 2014).

Colombia is a very solid team among a group of other very solid teams. I wouldn't say there is a clear cut best team in SA...Argentina, Chile, Brazil.

Actually, winning the EURO is more difficult than the World Cup, especially when it was a 16 or even 8 team tournament. No Algerias, South Koreas and Cameroons in the EURO Cup.
