I'm not sure why United failed to see this coming. Van Gaal's 3 central defender system could work but needs consistent, great players and none of the defenders are up to the task. When I found out they signed Rojo to help out, I have to laugh. Even the Argentineans have always contested him in the National team. And then there was this recent debate whether or not Rooney should be a starter... Helloooo? That's not where the problem is. The problem is back there, it's so obvious. It's a good thing United is not in the Champions this year.

Right now, to try to relieve things a bit, I would move to the traditional 4 defender system with the wingers helping to defend. Since Rafael is recovered from injury, he can definitively help on the right, I bet he can do a better job defending than the others. Then, I guess you have to hope for Shaw to do a good job on the left-back. Until they sign better defenders, I don't see other solution, but definitely, put a end to the 3-5-2 system for now.

Rafael is AWFUL. He shouldn't even be starting for the reserve team, let alone be in the starting 11 for Man Utd.

I'd rather have Valencia back there in a RB position.

The latest story is that Carrick is going to be deployed at the back now that's he's returned from injury.

Carrick? LOL. He was an improvised defender that did well when things were working better back there.

Valencia is not a defender, he can't defend at all!

Rafael can't be worse than the current...

Rafael is so inconsistent. One game he's like a pitbull, leaving the forward no time or space and running up with the ball creating chances. Next game he's sloppy, out of position and giving up free kicks. ugh

Carrick at central defense? LOL. better just to suit up a dead corpse and throw him on the pitch to get in the way of strikers. he's way too slow and not much of a tackler.

desperate times eh skeets?

Supposedly, United is going after the Brazilian defender Miranda from Atl. Madrid in the January transfer window. Now we are talking. He's one of my favorites defenders right now.

Yep- he only plays when he wants to play.

Now then, there are own goals and then there are own goals!

Here's one of the most amazing, during Sunderland's thrashing by Southampton at the weekend;
