Look he is a superb player but not the 3rd in the world. David Silva, Aguero, Suarez and Bale are better. Also Manuel Neur should be in contention, Zlatan - mmmmmm not to sure not consistant enough. Marco Reus is great but not there yet.

That's why I think there is no clear third out there. Heck, there is not even consensus on the first and second, I personally think CR7 is no match for Messi, even now that the gap between the 2 narrowed. Suarez to me was a clear third in the last season, not this one.

Re: '...no clear third out there'...

You know I'd check the 'football moneyball' stats on that. Answer will be there! For sure nums don't lie and flop all around the place...;-)...

Di Maria is supposedly the third more expensive right now but it depends where you look at...

FFT just published their infamous top 100 for 2014:

Messi is their third with Philpp Lahm in second.

Yeah, right.

Yeah, right.
Oh jeez!! That's ridiculous.

If anything, the only German player that should be in contention for the #3 spot would be Neuer. In fact, he's the third, and final, finalist for the Ballon D'Or this season, behind Ronaldo and Messi. So according to the voters in that competition, he's the 3rd best footballer in the game right now.

Re: 'Di Maria...third most expensive'..

You know that's right but I wanted to simply suggest just the numbers on various stats but not the one focusing on pure dollars, euros etc. I figure maybe a start which leaves out 'opinion' for a sec. Stats of course are objective in a sense. Just my take.

Since Suarez and Di Maria have played so-so this year, I think Robben and Bale are the better candidates now

Also if Neymar can keep up this pace, I think he would be in the convo too, he has 21 goals in 25 competitions this year, those numbers are insane for a winger.

It is very difficult to compare players when they play in entirely different positions. It isn't right to compare a goalkeeper to a winger. And also as of now, I cannot say that Messi is the second/first best anyway. But if he is, then third can be: Aguero, Neuer, Yaya Toure, Neymar (he matured as a person and player very much) or Bale.

Note that this is as of now, not as of how they perform overall in career and stuff.
