The 2022 World cup hosts are currently playing in the AFC Asian Cup with Iran, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in their group. After three games they lost all three matches and have no points.

Standings | Asian Cup

Qatar very well might become known as the weakest host to ever play in the World Cup. People often thought South Africa's group was the weakest in 2010, but I am willing to wager that many countries in Pot B, C and D would not mind being in Group A in 2022.

Thanks for reminding me about the absurdity of awarding the World Cup to Qatar.

Why not hold beach volleyball in Alaska in the winter, or have cross country skiing in the Mojave- they make as much sense.

I'm still holding out hope that FIFA will revoke the Qatar nomination and hold another bidding process.
I suppose the likelihood of that is as much as Qatar making it out of the group stage in 2022. Or as unlikely as corrupt Sepp Blatter losing the upcoming FIFA presidential election.

Yes they will be. Their giant neighbors, Saudi Arabia (population 30 million) are winless in their last 3 world cups with goal differential of 4 to 26. They've been horrible. Tiny Qatar (pop. 2.1 million) will likely be so much worse. Just a matter of trying not to embarass them. It might even stunt the other teams in the group, denying them competitive soccer in an early tournament match.

I suspect they will recruit and nationalize foreigners specifically to play for their World Cup side. As such, I wouldn't be shocked if they best results from other Middle Eastern or Asian squads.

Yeah, I was reading an artcile about how children with good soccer potential are being offered citizenship (along with their family). I don't remember all the details, but they are recruiting heavily in countries that have issues, I remember them talking specifically about African countries. If they can find kids in their mid teens they would be low 20's by 2022. I am guessing they will be much better than they are today by 2022. Today they would be the worst team ever, but they have 7 years...

I hope it's a complete and utter debacle just because all of the bribery and other scummy dealings that go on in selections like this and other actions nauseate me.

So, pass the popcorn, let's watch the train-wreck unfold.

Qatar spent an awful lot of money to look like idiots on the world stage, let's not disappoint them.
