FIFA voted unanimously to expand from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament. There will now be 16 groups of 3 teams with the top 2 teams from each group advancing to a 32 team knockout stage.

This is going to water down the tournament quite a bit with 16 more teams making it. It will be interesting to see how FIFA awards the additional slots. UEFA will probably get at least 4 of them.

I read this in the wall street journal this morning. They were saying if this was in effect for the past World Cup (2014) teams like Cuba, Ukraine, UAE & Cape Verde Islands would have made it. Don't think that makes the product on the pitch any better as there will probably be a lot more 4 to 5 goal blowouts, but like usual whatever can give you the most Jefferson's (money) wins 99.9% of the time even if it waters down your product.

FIFA pretty much destroyed the World Cup.

From what I gathered, Europe gets 3 more places, South America 1.5. Africa gets 5, Asia 4.5 more, North/Central America 3.5 more, Oceania 1. One from SA and Asia plays a playoff for the last spot.

Yes, we might see Syria vs Canada in the World Cup.

Ludicrious.

Has this been proposed as permanent or a one time deal to see how it works?

San Marino still has no chance. Poor poor San Marino.

So the places per continent are suggested as,

Europe: 16
Africa: 9
Asia: 8.5
North/Central America: 6.5
South America: 6
Oceania: 1
host: 1

If you look at the current ELO ratings (not the Coca-Cola crap) the 48 highest ranked countries are by continent,

Europe: 26
Africa: 4
Asia: 4 + 1 (Australia plays in Asia, not Oceania)
North/Central America: 4
South America: 9

Europe and South America are the biggest losers, while the rest gain.

Thanks for this. It's OK, we still have the Euros every 4 years. I like the idea of more African teams and spanning the globe better. The latter is important to FIFA otherwise they wouldn't have put a tourney in Qatar (ugh).

People might enjoy some of the blowouts. I would like to see qualifying shortened as much as possible though. Imagine all the powerhouse nations who always qualify with ease; qualifying matches will be especially weak now. Italy, Spain, Brazil, etal., could field under 17 teams and qualify easily. They should get byes like the hosts. Won't happen though. I find WC qualifiers to usually be very dull. In general I think there are too many matches tourneys of all kinds. Injuries are more frequent and the spark of play suffers.
