All they had to do was not lose. Mexico and Costa Rica dogged it too. Feel terrible for Pulisic. He deserves so much more than a team full of quit and incompetence. Sunil and Arena should both resign and never have a soccer related job again.

Not lose in a tropical country, on a wet pitch to a decent side, easier said than done. I would like to see Iceland, Serbia and a number of UEFA sides go to Trinidad, Honduras, Panama, Mexico City, and get results.
Don't give Pulisic a pass either, he was the biggest reason we got zero in New Jersey to Costa Rica. About 6 times we had nice team buildups and his final ball (shot or pass) was poor every time.
Under Arena and especially Klinsmann, our formation and tactics were just too offensive. We aren't talented enough to play a lot of attackers while forgoing proper protection, especially when we don't have qualified defensive MFs and stud CBs. Every opponent gets their joy against the US, we are too easy to play against. We are unwilling to ever "park the bus" even when that's what is needed.
So it's back to the drawing board. We need some progressive and more realistic thinking coming in. I'd say it's time for a Central or South American coach.

T&T played on the same wet pitch. We have a better team. They had nothing to play for. We had everything to play for and USA hadn't lost to T&T in nearly a decade.
Who took a dive so that the United States would not be able to compete?
That would be Mexico. They did field a strong lineup vs Honduras but it almost looked like they threw the match. But when the US wins just 3 of 10 final stage matches, it's hard to defend them or cry foul.
Thankfully MLS is doing so well that missing the world cup barely matters (for the financial health of the league).
BTW, MLS seems to have fortified rival nations more than the US! Many of Panama's, Honduras', and Costa Rica's top players are playing in MLS.
