Garber was in STL today:

Quote:
The commissioner told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that securing corporate sponsorships is an important next step in proving that St. Louis is ready for an MLS team.

“It would really help their bid if they had stadium naming rights and a jersey sponsor in place,” Garber said. “So there is a specific level of financial corporate support.” Still, Garber said of the meeting: “I think it's fair to say that it was among the largest or, certainly, the most prominent group of C-level leaders in any visit that I've had.”

“We’re incredibly pleased with how today’s visit went,” said Carolyn Kindle Betz, the leader of the MLS4TheLou ownership team, in the release. Betz is also the niece of Andy Taylor and senior vice president and executive director of the Enterprise Holdings Foundation. “I know we put our best foot forward by demonstrating our strong commitment to securing a team for St. Louis as we were able to show Commissioner Garber some of the enthusiasm the local business community has to financially support a MLS team.”

Why has STL's USL team attendance been so dreadful? I always thought STL would be what Cincinnati now is. Had their USL team done great in attendance they would have been picked over Cincy, Nashville, and Miami. MLS takes attendance very seriously in expansion.

Their stadium is on the smallish side -- 5,500 seats. That probably isn't helping.

It had nothing to do with attendance and everything with having no stadium/team funding secured.

There are a few cities with excellent attendance in MLS - but the real problem (in terms of MLS expansion and soccer as a whole) is attendance and support for the USMNT. One can’t help but wonder if all this expansion is built on a house of cards. It’s not like we haven’t been down this road before.
