I don't think they could manage to pay, that's why they're royally screwed now, Madrid and Barcelona have always been odius in the way they operate, they've been overspending for decades, ultimately their monopoly of Spanish TV rights has led to a dull two-horse race league which is why the EPL garnered more interest worldwide and subsequently drew in the big money. The fact that Athletic Madrid won the last league and the fact that finally Madrid and Barcelona's abhorrent dealings of the past have come back to bite them on the a*se could actually be a good thing for Spanish football, hopefully it will become more competitive and therefore more entertaining from now on
