I would like to know how Europeans feel about the overt and blatant racism in European soccer. Can you imagine going to an NFL game and a groups fans held Nazi flags and started chanting N word. It wouldn't be tolerated and it would make headlines here. In Europe, this is a regular occurrence. Is Europe really this racist? Is the Nazi presence in Europe this established? Wow, this was disturbing to say the least. I've been to many parts of the Deep Southern United States and you wouldn't see this here. Before anyone responds, please watch the video. It's an ESPN piece done by the award winning Jeremy Schapp so this isn't just some 30 second youtube highlight.
I've seen this ESPN piece more than once, and I think it probably gives the impression that such incidents happen more often than they actually do. Certainly it does happen on occasion, however. Most recently, it seems that Chelsea's Didier Drogba has been the target of monkey chants (UEFA May Investigate Alleged Racial Abuse Of Chelsea's Didier Drogba - Report - Goal.com). It is mostly certainly dreadful and disgusting behavior, and its existence causes me to scratch my head anytime Europeans try to lecture us on racist behavior. As you pointed out, that kind of stuff just doesn't happen in modern America. I don't recall ever hearing of such an inicident in my 40 years.
Yeah, its nothing new that racism runs quite rampant at several stadiums. Its sad and needs to stop, and I think some clubs are taking the right steps so far. That video is 4 years old and since then many clubs have taken drastic measures to curb racism and sectarianism.

Unfortunately, this has been going on for decades. It seems nothing will ever prevent stupid people from insulting players. That's very sad.
Many clubs had to pay fees because of such things, but their so-called supporters don't stop, they don't care about their team's money!
Of course, some clubs have taken measures, but it's not enough I guess...
however, when I'm abroad and some nut wants to refer to how us americans are so bad and how we have race issues and blah, blah, blah it can come in handy to have incidents like fans throwing bananas onto the pitch to remind them that they aren't perfect and if anything the states are probably the most diverse and accepting nations in the world
I can speak as regard my country , here the stadia have been considering since the 70s as safety walves for the frustrated youngsters , they're kinda a free for all zones , you can chant and do almost anything , there's sorta right to bully , before the foreigner non-white players arrived , i.e. the late 80s , it was the mere sport rivalry or the political motivations who warmed up the fans , now it's the skin color.
In all honest I've to say that these episodes are not so daily as someone may think , it happens every so often , it also happens that the fans of a team chante slurs at the black player of the opposite team but not to that of their own one , and that's pretty hipocritical
The last time I saw someone shout something racist at a black player in an English stadium he was immediately turned on and silenced by his fellow fans. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it has been mercifully rare for a long time now. Probably happens more at certain problem clubs.

I think the finger is being pointed at continental Europe, excluding probably France, Germany, Benelux, and Scandinavia.
