No.
US Soccer has not been designed to make a run in this cup. This WC is actually a rebuilding year and will be one of our youngest rosters in a long time. With all the young and upcoming talent, 2014 or more likely 2018 will be the year in which the US makes a strong run.
When you take into account the injuries to Davies, Gooch, and others I dont see them making it past the second round.
I love how pessimistic so many people are about this World Cup. I guess that's a good thing because the last time there was this much pessimism the U.S. advanced to the quarterfinals.

There really wasn't that much pessimism in 2002. That team at least won the gold cup.
An exit at the hands of Germany in the Round of 16 is most likely for the US.

We advanced to the finals of the Confederations Cup but if you actually watch it, you would know that we cant hang with the contenders. Italy kicked our ass, Brazil beat us handily once, and came back on us a second time. We did beat Spain but they completely dominated us that game. If Howard was not such a beast in the net that day, they would have beaten us soundly. They controlled the entire game and made us look like children for a good chunk of it and just were unfortunate not to score.
I like the potential of this US team but in reality, this team is young and we are dealing with injuries to key players. Gooch, Davies, Dempsey and others have recently faced very serious injuries. Hopefully, they all will be back but will probably not be 100% if they do.
Yeah, we could make a run this year but this is not going to be the year where we shock the world and make it to the quarters. It's not pessimism, it's realism.
