i love the SC weather. the spring and fall are great. the winter can be cold, but it doesn't stay cold long at all. but the summers are long - very long. And hot. My hometown was unpleasant from late May to mid-September.
if you're moving to aiken because of the 'moderate weather patterns' .. uh .. sure. I suppose everything is relative to what someone is used to. Just out of curiousity, where in California do you live where it is as humid as SC?

This link has the average relative humidity for every city in the country for morning and afternoon. You won't find any areas in the South or even the Northeast with low humidity during the summer.

For some reason Florida thinks they have the ownership on humidity. It's all over the place in the East, mid East, south East and mid West.
I've been all over the US in the summer, it's humid in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland. It's just their summer is shorter.
I've been watching weather channel closely to see the "real temp" vs "feels like temp" Consistantly we are the same or higher than Florida (least the part of Florida I am watching on the Gulf, Dunedin FL)

You may want to do go to some of the weather sites and look at the historical weather patterns for the South Carolina. I have found that the humidity is lower than where we live but the summer temps are higher. Probably depends on what you can tolerate. But you are not going to find any place in the South that doesn't get warm and humid in the summer. How much can you tolerate??? What will you be doing? are you retired? or will you be working outside? all factors to consider. I am retired so I am not concerned about a couple of month of warm and humid weather.
Make sure you look at Aiken if you are coming from California,, I have found that it is going to be less of a cultural shock because of the demographics of this particular little town.. population 25k to 30k in the city. Look at the web site of Woodside Plantation or Mount Vintage Plantation.

I hate to disappoint you, but Aiken does not have a short Summer. Where did you receive that information?

"Hot" or "Cold" are two of the most undefinable terms in Human vocabulary.
I've been in RJ, Brazil, where the Cariocas slip into heavy Italian leather coats at 68F, and live in N. Wisconsin where you'll see people (mostly males in their 20's) wearing shorts (and a jacket) when it's 20F.
However, if your point of reference is the typical Calif climate, then nowhere in SC will the summer be "short", or "pleasant".
