City populations in S.C. can be deceiving. S.C. has the most restrictive annexation laws in the nation, therefore actual towns and cities are smaller than the reality of area populations.
Have to consider adjacent areas, mostly unincorporated, but also the smaller towns. Example: for Greenville, consider Mauldin, Simpsonville, Taylor, Easley, Parker, Berea, etc. when thinking population.
Yep... there are dozens of cities in SC that are surrounded by unincorporated areas or Census Designated Places (CDP) that have sizable populations but are not part of the central cities for a variety of reasons. Then there are the cities that formed to keep the bigger towns out.. i.e. Forest Acres and Arcadia Lakes in the Columbia metro for example. Folks is this forum have educated me on the fact that City Limit size doesnt really matter unless you are referring strictly to tax base via property tax but its your metro area population is what businesses and industries pay attention to. I still like ,for chest beating purposes, to see more cities in SC around the 100k mark
