Not sure which post you're replying to... but I'm not kidding on what I know and what happened to my family.
One thing I've discovered is that tourist areas have a high crime rate (which is hushed up).

It isn't based on population at all. If we could just chalk it up to population then we could just move to smaller cities but that is simply not the case.
I use Charlotte as an example because I live in the area and it is the area I have researched. I don't know where Detroit and Miami fall on the list but go check it out and compare it to some of the southern cities. I said this before and I will say it again, Charlotte is a much more violent city than LA or New York!!!! Which city is smaller, well duh???!!! Florance for heaven's sake is pretty high on the list and that is no where near a large town.
Again, the south is an awesome place to live. Crime is typically concentrated in certain areas just like most places BUT that still doesn't make it OK. It is still something we need to face and deal with, not gloss over with excuses. That will do us no good.

Nah, not hushed up at all. It is posted all over the place just like it is for other cities. It just isn't convenient for us to admit it when it is a place we like to go visit.

Tourist areas have a high crime rate because crimes rates are based on the permanent population, but tourist areas can have millions of visitors a year - some of those visitors do commit crimes.

I agree. The whole southeast is suffering a crime crisis. But, however challenging the fight with crime, it must be nice to see the Law Enforcement fright back. In Dillon, S.C. the cops are the crooks. Going to church on Sunday...and back to being the old SELF
on Monday. Dillon. The small Mafia Town.

I discovered years ago that tourist/vacation spots have a lot of crime. Particularly locals taking advantage of tourist.
A friend had gone on a vacation to Hawaii and told me it had been worse vacation she ever had. While sleeping in hotel room, person came in and robbed them (a professional job) and another person in her tour group was mugged and died of the injuries. Police told her there is a high crime rate in the islands but it is kept quiet so as not to scare tourist away.
Unfortunately, my family knows first hand of the crime rate in SC. My nephew was murdered in North Myrtle Beach while on vacation. Shot in the head over a spilled beer by a local. Guy might of been part of a "gang" in the sense he had to show his homies?? what happens when he is not shown "respect".

I'm sorry for your families loss but I don't normally recommend basing an opinion of an area over an isolated event with one person. I lived in Hilton Head for three years and it was safe. I never personally witnessed a crime and bar fights can happen anywhere. I don't know the story but I imagine violence at night with alcohol involved in bars happens in other parts of the country also.
