North vs South...I don't get it?
Hi all,
Wish I would have found this site before moving from Ma. to Ga. two years ago. I just don't understand this whole issue. Why are some people so hung up on this? I enjoy meeting new people and respect them and their way of life without judging them because they may be different then me. Why do I feel like I just CAN'T fit in here. I'm looking to move again possibly to S.C. but don't want to feel like an "outcast" again. Up north I've never used the term "yankee" or "redneck". We're all created equally I just don't understand why this is such a big isue for some.

Hi. I'm from NC, but was a military wife for years, and traveled a lot. I went back to NC, and have a very open mind due to the military travel. My advice is to live near a town that has a military installation, and you won't be dealing with feeling different. And, by the way, I welcome anyone to move to our little town of Albemarle, NC. We love any good people that treats us fair.

If you move to a larger city you shouldn't find much of that attitude.

Move to the Charlotte area and you'll be ok. Mostly people from up north around here.

It's not really an issue. I moved here from NJ and haven't heard anyone mention Yankee or say anything negative. If anything I've heard people from here make jokes about the South. On this forum it's more of an issue but I would assume if you walk around in the South saying over and over "up north we did it this way" that's going to get a peoples nerves, as it would anywhere. I was in a class with a woman from NJ that every other word was NJ this and NJ that it was very annoying.

I never felt more like an outsider to the natives than when I lived in New England for 20 years! Three different states: CT, MA, RI and the natives treated me in each place like I was forever an outsider. I lived in CT for 4 years, MA for 9, and RI for 7 years, and in each place people would ask "You're not from here are you?" The people there are even colder toward you when you are from somewhere else. I definitely do not have this problem here in the south.

In truth, those same folks don't care all that much for each other...

I think its an individual experience. Most people won't care where you're from, but that doesn't mean it won't be discussed. Its my experience that "yankee" in the deragatory sense usually means someone who comes down South and expects it to be like up North. People who don't have attitude problems and just learn to accept the South for what it is never have problems.

I've lived in alot of places, and like you said, I like meeting people, I love differences...it makes life interesting.
But I have NEVER been treated so rude as I have been in SC. When we moved there the town was still small town (it has sinced boomed). Not only were they rude and condecending, but I could not get a job. When I finally was hired after 6 months, it was by a Pennsylvanian. And then I was later hired by an East Indian, and a fellow New Yorker.
